Request a Recommendation Letter
Dear Student,
Applying to Graduate/ Professional Programs and jobs is an exciting time! Thank you for considering me as a reference.
Writing a strong letter of recommendation means I can speak to your strengths as a potential professional. That means I know you well enough to say I am comfortable with you representing CSUN and our department. Behaviors that would prevent me from writing a strong letter include:
-
consistently being late to class
-
missing several classes without valid excuses
-
falling asleep in class
-
being disruptive in class
-
not adhering to guidelines stated in the syllabus (e.g., guidelines for email communication, asking questions that are found on the syllabus or Canvas, etc.)
-
not completing required assignments or duties on time
-
not being responsive to my emails
-
my need to send you reminders or “check ins” about independent projects
In order for me to write you a strong letter of recommendation, you need to have either taken two classes by me (with a grade of B or higher) or meet at least two of the following criteria.
-
Taken a class by me (with a grade of B or higher)
-
Proctored/peer mentored for me
-
Conducted research with me
-
Made an effort to talk to me about your future plans and ambitions through office hours.
If you do not meet the criteria above, unfortunately, I cannot write you a strong letter of recommendation. You should find someone who knows you well enough to write you a letter. If you have no one else, I suggest you delay your application until I know you well enough to write you a letter.
If you do meet the criteria above, please complete the form below at least 1 month in advance of the due date. I will not accept applications that have less than 1 month notice unless I have already written you a letter before, and this will be on a case by case basis.
If you need a letter of recommendation, download the “Recommendation request form”. If you only need to list me as a reference, download the “Reference request – no letter” form.
Thank you,
Dr. Virginia Huynh
